fellowship, support, & encourage each other

Christian Home Educators of Camden
Who we are, what we do, why we do it, and how we go about it:
CHEC is an informal homeschool support group in the greater Camden,
South Carolina area. Our purpose is to provide local homeschooling
families with opportunities to support one another with prayer and
friendship in the day-to-day challenges of homeschooling through our
meetings and activities. This concept of mom-to-mom support is the
cornerstone of our group. Chec is not a third-option accountability group.
“Small groups” are CHEC’s vehicle through which members connect,
bond and fellowship. HERE is where you will find the “support” of our
support group! Small groups provide a setting in which moms can get to
know each other. Generally, small groups have a monthly Moms-only
meeting. They may also set up activities for the children of the small
group members and “extra” activities for moms. Every group works best
when members pitch in and chime in. Some groups have agendas and
planned events, others just get together to chat. (There is almost always
food!) Each group is free to organize by common consent in a way that
meets the needs or preferences of its members. Members are free to
participate in any or all of the small groups available, regardless of their
location, and to request formation of new groups.
Co-ops are classes or activities offered by CHEC members to CHEC
members only, to enrich the experiences of our children through
education or fellowship. Co-ops may be limited by age requirements,
class size, or other criteria determined by the co-op leader.
Field trips are planned by individual CHEC members. Age and capacity
limits may apply.
Annual events Administrative Team members plan the following annual
group-wide events: CHEC-In (August sign-up for co-ops & membership),
Testing (optional - uses tests available through Bob Jones), Field Day
(late April/early May fun, age-appropriate competition), and Recognition
Night (performances, "graduations", display tables, and reception).
We also usually have Meet-N-Greet (first-of-the-year get-together), a
Christmas Party (when we gather for singing, crafts, and food, and
perform carols for the residents of a local nursing home), a family fun
evening event (sometime in Jan. or Feb.). On occasion, other group-
wide events may also be planned.
Our website is updated monthly to keep members informed about CHEC-
related events. Our yahoo loop is used for day-to-day support, calendar
reminders, and "breaking news". At times events or classes which are
available to the community at large (not sponsored by CHEC) are
advertised through the loop or on the website. They are provided solely
for your information, and no guarantees are implied as to their content or
suitability for your family. Please do your own research.
The guiding document for CHEC is available in the member packet. It
reads, in part, “We are a group of Christian homeschooling families who
desire to fellowship with each other, learn from each other, support and
encourage each other in this high calling… We know we cannot meet the
absolute needs of every member, but we trust that by putting
homeschoolers in touch with each other, through an excellent directory
and through small-group meetings, …each member will find the
encouragement and support that is so necessary for each of us as
Christians and as homeschoolers. We encourage MEMBERS to offer
their God-given talents and gifts … to enrich the education of our
children.” This document is intentionally non-specific in many areas so
the group has the freedom to be flexible.
The guiding body for our group is our Administrative Team. They are a
group of ladies with many years of homeschooling experience, who are
also long-term members of CHEC. The purpose of this team is to
maintain the original vision of a Christ-centered homeschool support
group and to provide a foundation upon which the CHEC members can
build a support system. The responsibilities of the A/T include
organization of annual whole-group events, news coordination and
dissemination; publication of an annual directory, and managing the
finances.
Our field trips, co-ops, and small group meetings are member-
driven: We think members know best what their needs are, and when
given the freedom to plan for themselves and include others in those
plans they are most likely to have those needs met. Therefore, the co-
op, field trip, and meeting arenas are open to be member-led. This
means you do not have to obtain approval for any topic you would like to
bring up, field trip you would like to plan, or co-op you would like to offer.
Our statement of faith provides the only limitation - we strive to honor
God and each other in all we do.
If you would like to join CHEC, print and follow the directions in our
Member form (link below) or email our secretary and request a membership
packet. If you would like more information, click on "contact us" and we will
do our best to answer any questions you have. Please be descriptive in your
subject line and let us know how you found us. God Bless!
